U-Bein Bridge; cycle/drive to Monywa
- Cycling km approx. 65 km
(The first part is along the main road which can be busy: depending on traffic and how everyone is feeling, your leader may suggest cutting out the first 25 km, so that you avoid the busy section and only cycle the last 40 km on quieter roads)
Prepare yourself for an early start today as we head out to one of Myanmar's most exciting and utterly iconic sights, U Bein Bridge.
This unique teak bridge spans over a kilometer and is best enjoyed at sunrise when villagers use it to begin their journey to work, and the fishermen below get ready for a day on the water. Don’t forget your camera because this is one of the most photogenic sights of the country and not to be missed.
After a comfortable drive to Myin Mu (approx. 2 hours), we will hop on our bikes and hit the road to Monywa visiting the beautiful Hindu style Thanbodday temple en route. Thanbodday is one of Burma's main attractions, yet like a lot of sites outside Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan is seldom visited by foreign tourists. The site dates back to 1303 and contains hundreds of gleaming gold-topped stupas. Inside, there are more than 500,000 Buddha images of all shapes and sizes for us to enjoy.
We will also take the opportunity to stop at the unmissable Boditahtaung pagoda, which houses the largest reclining Buddha image in the country, at 100 m long and 27 m high before heading over to view the largest standing Buddha in the world, Laykyun Setkyar.
Drive and cycle to Pakkoku; boat ride on Irrawaddy River to Bagan
- Cycling km approx. 50 km
(For those that would like to make this day even more memorable with an optional balloon ride please consult the Optional Extras section.)
We will start of the day with a relaxing cycle from the hotel towards Ma Au village where we will transfer to Pakkoku jetty (transfer approx. 1 hour/55 km) and board a boat on the fabulous Irrawaddy River. Our destination is the ancient wonder of Bagan (Pagan).
Welcome to the magical Bagan! Here there are over 2000 temples and pagodas littered across 25 square miles, making Bagan one of the world’s most spectacular and most untouched archaeological sites. This is a special place where Buddhism, Hinduism and Nat worship come together amongst an array of fascinating shrines.
Explore Bagan temple complex by bike
- Cycling km approx. 25 km
Wake up this morning in a mystical wonderland.
After breakfast spend the morning exploring the vast temple complex. Enjoy the unique peaks and brick stupa spreading out as far as the horizon. Building commenced here after the former Kings of Bagan introduced Theravada Buddhism in the mid-11th Century, a string of Kings followed building temples to worship their gods. Ananda Pahto with its bejewelled 'hti' (umbrella), Dhammayangyi pahto and Shwesandaw Paya are the largest and most impressive sights. They will top of our list to visit today, with plenty of smaller hidden gems offering unique opportunities to climb and delve deeper into Bagan’s fascinating history.
This afternoon, enjoy some time relaxing at the hotel out of the heat of the sun.
Web will meet for the most magical experience of the day, sunset overlooking these stunning temples.
